Version format:
SciBit follows a strict version-policy and all products have a version format as in these examples which are all equivalent:
- [Optional Reference to Year of release "."] Major Version "." Minor Version "." Build
- [[YYY]Y.]MM.NN.BB
- 2004.1.2.3 or [200]4.1.2.3 or simply 1.2.3
In general the YYYY part of a version is left out when we speak of a specific product version or when it comes to computing upgrades. The release year is purely for informative purposes, thus product A with version 2004.1.2.3 equals product A version 2005.1.2.3, although it would never happen that exactly the same product version is released in different year.
Upgrade Policy
SciBit's products are diverse and not all are commercial products. Some are free, some are licensed per machine, some per developer, others per site and yet others are not sold but licensed for use by a customer for a specific period. In general though:
- If a product is offered for free, upgrading is usually also free. (Some free products might force you to obtain and use trail codes which eventually expire, forcing you to visit the SciBit site to obtain a new code)
- If a product is offered as commercial with minor upgrades for free, you are guaranteed to receive all (and using the format as described above) NN.BB upgrades for free. SciBit considers every new major version and have been known to offer, almost by default, even major version (MM) upgrades free. It happens only in exceptional cases that SciBit requires an upgrade fee for any product. If you wish to budget for upgrades, then use 25% of your current version's license price as a good budget estimate.
